Women In Your Community: Meet Mani!

Name: Mani Ghuman
Age: 28
Occupation: Substitute teacher/Lyft driver/Yoga teacher
Today I wanted to shine some light on my good friend Mani (or some of you might know her by @manehhh on Instagram.) This woman has been adding value to the yoga community with her yin yoga offerings here in Fresno. If you've never taken a yin class I HIGHLY suggest you do. Mani has the talent of effortlessly making you feel comfortable; to come as you are. After taking classes in hot temperatures, its a nice change to practice on the ground (earth) and have a cool down session.
What is yin yoga?
Yin yoga is a corresponding yoga practice to the more dynamic and active yoga style. Most forms of yoga today are dynamic and designed to work only half of our body, the muscular half, the “yang” tissues. Often called the "other half" of yoga, yin physically restores and maintains the natural mobility of our ligaments, bones, and deep fascicle networks. Energetically, yin yoga activates the body's meridian system and supports flow and emotional balance.

How long have you been practicing yoga/yin yoga?
I have been on path of yoga since childhood, growing up in Punjab, India. It was basic Hatha (physical) practice in school, and Bhakti (devotional) practice with my family. I was introduced to yin yoga few years ago but I didn’t practice regularly. I was reintroduced to yin yoga this summer by my sister who enthusiastically told me about all these benefits and great fundamentals training in Vancouver, Canada with one of first yoga researchers Bernie Clark and Diana Batts. I absolutely loved practicing and learning about yin, so now I’m regularly cultivating that energy.

What inspired you to start a “yoga in the park” practice?
I truly believe that most of us need to spend more time outside in nature. Practicing on Mother Earth helps neutralize and achieve balance within.  and I would love to be part of that movement in Fresno.
Where is this event held? Does it cost?
This class of Yin Yoga is held at Woodward Park on the dog park side, we are usually practicing underneath the trees. It’s all donation based; minimum $5 is much appreciated since it’s just me taking time out to share this practice.
How often will you be hosting this event and where can we contact you for more info?

I dedicate Wednesday evenings @ 5pm as of now. I usually send out a flyer via Instagram as reminder days before.

How you would you describe this class/and or your teaching style?
My teaching style is easy going and very informative. I guide people into their postures and then share details how about the posture is beneficial and on auspicious days I share wisdom from sages that have inspired or enlightened me.
What is the one (most important) thing you want to give to the community from taking your class?

It’s all a sharing. That’s the only thing I want to give to community.I want to share my knowledge that will help the community become balanced and whole. We simply need more people to meditate and cultivate this nurturing/allowing energy.

Do any outside forces influence your teaching?
God and the Universe inspires me! I have been lucky to be surrounded by such strong, humble and loving people who give me continuous inspiration to go beyond my limited mind and explore the unlimited potential within, which we all have as human beings.
