6/26/20 Today Khurangbin released their new record Mordecai and it is straight heat. The first song I ever heard from them was the well known "Evan Finds the Third Room" which you've probably heard on one of your yoga teacher's playlists. Once I heard this I started digging and "Como Me Quieres" and "Texas Sun" became my favorites as well. I started rotating them in some of my sets and it just completes the whole vibe. I think the best way to describe their sound is beautiful combo of soul, funk, psychedelia, West African, and RnB. The Texan group is made of 3 - Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and DJ on drums. I recently seen an interview of them and I really dig Laura's perspective, she talks about her early stages of being/becoming and artist - she shares nervous moments. It's very humbling.
Let's talk about this RECORD though! I love doing first impressions - picking out my favorites and what lyrics speak out to me. I was pretty surprised to find out that this record had lyrics, considering that "Como Me Quieres" was all instrumental.
2. Time (You & I) If we had more time We could live forever Just You and I We could be together Just you and I We can play like children play We can say like children say That's Life
I just really need to speak on how beautiful and melodic this beat is. I'm guessing an 95 bpm, but this one just makes my body move. Pure joy.
5. If There is No Question We cried from laughing I'll go You're not crazy You're not crazy Hearts will get broken I'll go with you You're not crazy You're wild But, you're not crazy
"You're wild, but you're not crazy." LIKE, HELLO. Such a perfect lyrics. Speaks. Volumes.
6. One to Remember This is such a beautiful instrumental and I think the only one on the entire record. The ticks are soft but the beat is OOF. Lmao. This is a great transition from the previous song "Pelota."
7. Dearest Alfred Where are you now? We hardly see or speak anymore Your letter is the best gift I wanna cook to this song. Honestly though. I seriously get some Freddie Gibbs "Thuggin'" vibes from it. Listen to these songs back to back and tell me what you think.
Overall I really loved this record and how they kept their worldly sound. It's such a great turn from what their other two albums with the lyrics incorporated from all of them. Very much appreciated. Kind of just want to book a flight to Philippines now. Maybe Texas.
